The cartridge that almost sank a console: an oral history

The story starts with a deadline. The console was due on shelves in eleven weeks, and its headline game did not yet run for more than four minutes without crashing.

The build that shipped

People who were in the room remember the last month as a blur of test cartridges and couriers. The team cut two full levels and a save system. What remained fit on the cartridge with 312 bytes to spare.

We did not think it was good. We thought it was finished. Those are different things.

Why it still matters

Three decades later the game is traded by collectors and studied by designers. Its shortcuts became conventions, and its failures taught a generation of developers what a launch title has to do.

How to play it today

An official re-release is available on current consoles. Original hardware owners should budget for a good upscaler, which we cover in our retro display guide.
